Dental Sealants

Stay Ahead of Cavities with Natural-looking Dental Sealants

Who doesn’t like a healthy, beautiful smile? A healthy-looking smile increases self confidence, boosts your mood, and improves your overall appearance. Regrettably, dental problems like cavities are always lurking, waiting to affect your smile. In fact, research shows that at least 92% of adults aged 20 to 60 have had incidences of cavities in their lifetime!

The good news is that dental cavities are preventable. Dr. Sima F. Chegini at Arsmiles Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers dental sealants for children and adults to protect decay-prone teeth.

What are dental sealants?

A dental sealant is a colorless resin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your teeth, especially your molars and premolars. Your back teeth have grooves, pits and fissures that are hard to clean with a tooth brush. Due to challenges in removing the bacteria trapped in these tiny microscopic pits and fissures, your posterior back teeth become prone and vulnerable to harmful bacteria accumulating in them, leading to caries formation, tooth decay and cavities.

Sealants fill in all the tiny microscopic irregularities of the surface anatomy of the of your back molars and form a protective barrier between your teeth and the harmful bacteria, preventing cavities and decay. Additionally by filling in all the small pits & fissures of your rear teeth, sealants simplify teeth cleaning by keeping your teeth free from plaque and debris.

What to expect during the procedure

Dental sealants are frequently used in children as soon as their molars are erupted and before they are affected by bacteria and decay formation. Young individuals and growing patients are more prone to cavities and tooth decay formation due to their challenges in keeping the permanent molars erupting in the very back of their small mouths clean and due to frequent snacking habits. Although adults could also benefit from dental sealants but that should be determined after a dentist’s evaluation. Dental sealants cover back teeth including molars and premolars with deeper grooves and fissures to reduce the risk of decay.

During your appointment, Dr. Chegini will evaluate your teeth to verify if you are a good candidate for dental sealants. If so, we will thoroughly clean the teeth from plaque, bacteria and food debris. Then, we will apply a conditioning gel to the tooth’s surface to help the sealant adhere and bond better. Next, we will apply the sealant material to the chewing surfaces of your teeth and then use a special light to cure and set the sealant. The procedure takes just a few minutes per tooth, and there is no downtime afterward.
